Italy's government is a democratic republic. There are some differences (like they have a prime minister, and a parliament instead of a congress) and some similarities (like both have Judicial and Legislative branches and we both have a president) between the U.S and the Italian government. Sergio Mattarella has been the Italian president since January 31st 2015 and Paolo Gentiloni has been prime minister since 2016. The president is elected by an electoral collage which si made up by both houses of parliament and 58 regional representatives. The president serves a 7 year term, the last election was January 29th, 30th and 31st of 2016. You have to be 18 to vote in an election and 25 to vote in senatorial elections.
